Prequels don't always work but Kelly does a masterful job of fitting this book, which takes place long before the events of the earlier books in the series, seamlessly into the timeline. The beginning, ending, and some middle parts of it show what is happening in the present and explain how and why we are getting this extended flashback. As expected we see many beloved characters in their younger days and how their experiences and personalities then become the groundwork for who they become later on. In addition though in one of the smoothest ways possible, Kelly introduces a key character from Lorrek's past, fully integrates them into his life, and explains why they haven't been mentioned before. It really does need to be read to be fully appreciated how well this is done.
There are also a few hints laid down in this book as to future events and as the fourth book in this series it is great to see that it is just as strong a tale as the rest of the series if not stronger.

Once again, my standard for fantasy and sci-fi has been met and exceeded.
Set 20 years prior to the events of book 1, it gives us a glimpse into the life of a younger Lorrek, while setting relevant events into motion, and paving a path for Book 5.
Fans of the series will recognize familiar faces, see things set in motion that affect Lorrek years later, as well as reveal some personal details about Lorrek, and someone he once cared for.
It has action, scheming a plenty, a bit of romance without devolving into the typical pattern of love triangles.
For those familiar with the series, there are also some subtle hints laid out for future books, and a mystery surrounding Lorrek and his family.
5/5, will read again, and wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who enjoys sci-fi and fantasy.

A Great Addition to the Series!
Kelly Blanchard does it again! In this addition to the series we go back in time to when the main character, the multi-faceted Prince Lorrek was young. It was so much fun seeing all of our favorite characters in their formative years! Not only did Ms. Blanchard give us teasers as to what is to come in the present, but we see the groundwork laid for the deep and complex adult Lorrek is destined to become. I won't give any spoilers - you have to read this one for yourself - but the story arc was handled well (as always) and the characters grow even richer and more developed by this view into the past. Fun, exciting, and set in an intricate, fascinating, and well-thought out world, this is one you won't want to miss.
